Vitamin B12
Nov 25, 2002

I found this on http://www.catie.ca/myh1999.nsf/5d8f01691c21f51485256583007bc226/72bd6f738efeefa18525699d007303ef?OpenDocument

Vitamin B12 by a non-stomach route: sublingual (under the tongue), twice daily; nasal gel (in the nose), once daily; or injections, three times weekly)

What does this mean? Vitamin B12 doesn't come in a tablet form?

Thanks

Yes! B12 does come in tablet forms, generally as a part of a multivitamin. The reason for interest in other ways to deliver B12 to the body is that for some people (not everyone) with HIV infection, there is a change in absorption of vitamin B12.

Suspects include reduced acidity in the stomach (required to attach the vehicle "intrinsic factor" for proper absorption) and changes in the surface of the intestinal area where B12 is absorbed.

As with other supplements and medications, the preference for therapy with B12 is a matter of opinion and experience. If you are concerned, you can have your B12 level checked. If it is a problem, oral replacement is the place to start.

By the way, B12 is found in food sources such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy, and eggs.
