Steroids used on HIVers
Jun 24, 2004
Dear Sirs, First of all let me congratulate you on this wonderful site. I have clarified many doubts and put my mind at easy in many subjects just by reading your information. Im 35 year old brazilian. I have been living with HIV for 4 years. I have a wonderful lady doctor who has kept the virus under control - my viral load is undetectable and CD4 is 350 - Since the begining of treatment I have been taking nelfinavir/efavirenz/lamivudine and AZT with discipline and never changed this combination. However I have always been a slim guy and now Im really slim with very thin legs and that is starting to bother me a lot. I go to the gym 3 times a week and try to eat a lot but it s not working. My doctor however wont even listen to steroids because shes afraid of liver problems although I have done liver tests and they are all fine. I can easily get Oxandrolona, Deca Durabolin and Testosterone Cipyonate here at the chemists but I dont know which ones to take with what, the safe dosage and for how long. I dont want to do anything stupid like damage my liver or risk my treatment but I would really like to gain some weight (Im 5'11 and 147 pounds). Also some guys at the gym take maltodextrine while they exercise, would that be alright for me too ? Sorry for my long question. All the best for you and keep the good work.

Response from Dr. Moyle

I really think you should avoid taking anabolic steroids as not only may they harm you liver that wont help you gain the fat you want on your legs, the will harm you cholesterol levels, reduce your own natural hormone levels and can change you personality.
I would suggest working with a dietitian and personal trainer to increase your food intake and build up you body without risking your HIV therapy.
I don't quite know why, if this is your first therapy, why you need 4 drugs so it may be worth discussing with your doctor dropping the nelfinavir and maybe switching the AZT to abacavir or tenofovir to reduce the tablet load and potentially manage or prevent any fat loss
I hope this helps
Graeme Moyle
