testosterone ?
Dec 18, 2003

I just read that testosterone has not been shown as either safe or beneficial for the many men who use it to improve their strength and mood, an expert panel of doctors concluded Wednesday SO what does that mean for HIV positive men? http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2003/11/13/MNGJ730QPG1.DTL

Response from Dr. Moyle

Thanks for pointing this article out, The key quote here is "For men whose testosterone is already in the normal range, there is no proof that it makes them better in any way," said panel member Deborah Grady of UCSF. "If there is no proven benefit for them, they shouldn't be taking testosterone no matter what the risk. And here there is a possible problem with prostate cancer."

That's why we (and the FDA) always recommend repeated checks of the testosterone to confirm that it consistently meaningfully low before instigating treatment. Howver, there are some physicians who like to try testosterone as a 'trial of therapy' in someone with low mood and low energy. Occasionally it works. regards
