| she's on medication and he's not Aug 29, 2000 I AM WORRIED ABOUT A VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF MINE, SHE DISCOVERED SHE WAS PREGNANT AND AT THE SAME TIME DISCOVERED THAT SHE WAS HIV POSITIVE. SHE BEGAN TAKING MEDICATIONS TO PROTECT THE BABY BUT AT THE SAME TIME CONTINUED TO HAVE UNPROTECTED SEX WITH THE FATHER OF HER CHILD. THEY HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR SEVERAL YEARS YET HE REFUSES TO BE TESTED, MY QUESTIONS ARE THESE; A.COULD THE PREGNANCY HAVE AFFECTED HOW FAST THE DISEASE PROGRESSES AND SHORTEN HER LIFE EXPECTANCY? B. IS THE MEDICATION EFFECTIVE EVEN THOUGH SHE CONTINUES TO HAVE UNPROTECTED SEX WITH HER PARTNER WHO IS NOT ON MEDICATION AND HAS NOT BEEN TESTED? |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
A. Possibly, but unlikely, now that she is on meds. B. Probably. She will have a good response to treatment of her own virus. She could become infected with another strain from her partner (if the partner is infected), but that is highly unlikely if she continues to receive HIV meds. MH | |||
