FAST BEFORE VL TESTING?
Sep 3, 2000

Just curious why there is no talk about fasting before testing for VL and CD4. Most other important blood testing requires fasting before a really accurate answer. I tested at Long's Drugs for cholesterol and that other HDL (I think that is what it was)thing, and tested really high for HDL (341) without fasting. Then I asked my primary doctor and he said to take it again and fast for 12 hours before!!! He said never take a test like that without fasting. My results were so completely different (much lower and normal). I would assume HIV tests would be much more accurate with fasting before the test??? I think I'll try it just to blow my own horn. Never heard this question asked before.

Sincerely, Playing Guessing Games.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

There is no data to my knowledge to suggest that viral load is affected by a meal. Although it has not been formally studied. The lipid profiles as well as blood glucose are very much affected by food, and so have fasting requirements for maximum interpretation.
