| FAST BEFORE VL TESTING? Sep 3, 2000 Just curious why there is no talk about fasting before testing for VL and CD4. Most other important blood testing requires fasting before a really accurate answer. I tested at Long's Drugs for cholesterol and that other HDL (I think that is what it was)thing, and tested really high for HDL (341) without fasting. Then I asked my primary doctor and he said to take it again and fast for 12 hours before!!! He said never take a test like that without fasting. My results were so completely different (much lower and normal). I would assume HIV tests would be much more accurate with fasting before the test??? I think I'll try it just to blow my own horn. Never heard this question asked before. Sincerely, Playing Guessing Games. |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
There is no data to my knowledge to suggest that viral load is affected by a meal. Although it has not been formally studied. The lipid profiles as well as blood glucose are very much affected by food, and so have fasting requirements for maximum interpretation. Mh | |||
