|Why my viral load goes down markedly without treatment
Sep 18, 2000
I am a white male aged 29 and my viral load was 19,000 in April 2000. Since then it has risen to 97,000. a month later it began to drop to 57,000 and today it is down to 18,000. This is without treatment. I am treatment naive. Why is this happening. Is it common? My CD4 is 320 and is relatively stable.

In people who are not receiving treatment, there can be changes in the viral load. The viral load tests can have an assay variability of up to 3 fold. That means a viral load of 19,000 might range up to as high as 57,000 just because of the test variability. Other clinical conditions can affect viral load. If you have an infection or the flu, get vaccinated, or binge on recreational drugs, all of these things can increase the viral load by 5-100 fold transiently.
