| Bursitis, Relafen, Vincamine and Viral Load? Mar 22, 1999 I've not yet started treatment, as my numbers had been on the borderline - T4 at 470, T4/T8 = 1.0, VL about 22,000. This had been improved since first tests 1 year ago (T4=290, ratio 0.8, VL=59,000) when I started a number of dietary supplements and anti- viral herbs as recommended by DAAIR org. and other sources. Numbers went down to current levels at next test (May 98) and had stayed there (checked every 2 months) until latest test March 1. Numbers are now T4=450, VL=87,000. HIV doc suggests either staring AR now, or, if there were any events or infections that could have caused rise in VL recently, retest in 4-6 weeks. My question is whether you think the following could have had an effect on VL: Early Jan. I fell on ice and aquired Bursitis of elbow. It appears to be tending towards becoming chronic as NSAID (Relafen) and aspiration have not resolved it. Fluid was tested for infection culture and white cell count and all looked normal. (Even cortisone injection, done AFTER latest test so as not to interfere with T-cell count, has not helped resolve). Have been on daily Relafen (2x 750mg once daily) since late Jan. Finally, also I had been trying a 'smart drug' I found in a health food store - Vincamine (supposed to increase cerebral blood flow & glucose metabolism) for several weeks before test) - Could non-septic bursitis be having some stimulatory effect on immune system, resulting in VL increase? - Could Relafen be having effect on VL? - Could HIV be having effect on preventing bursitis from going away? - Any known effect of vinca alkoloids on immune system? Thanks for any help... |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
I am sorry I don't have any specific answers to your questions about the meds or supplements, it has not been studied. Other infections or inflammatory processes have been found to transiently increase viral load. What has been studied has usually had systemic or total body symptoms. It is unknown whether a localized inflammation like you describe would have an effect on viral load. I would agree with your doctor though, I think it may be time for antiretroviral therapy. MH | |||
