cd4's and viral load
Aug 23, 1999

Hello My question consernes viral load and cd4's. My partner recently got back his results and they were good and bad. Cd4's were 800, but viral load up to 30,000 from 4500!! there had been a 5months break in between the blood works. Now, should i be worried? What does this mean when the other one is really good and other bad? Which of these is more important? And what could cause this? Thank you so much!

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I don't have enough info to comment. You did not indicate whether your partner was receiving treatment and what the current CD4 count is. At a basic level, a change from 4500 to 30,000 is significant and not the result of assay variablity. An increase like that could be the result on some other intercurrent illness, vaccination, medication adherence issues, or the development of resistance. MH
