| testing Sep 15, 2001 Doctor, I believe that the 4 week test is very accurate. Let me tell you why. Upon infection, our bodies will immediately start producing anti-bodies and will continue to do so at an increasing rate. SO, by 4 weeks, the latest antibody test will be able to pick it up. Only those who are suffering from an immune related disease or cancer etc(you would already be aware if you have any of these serious illnesses)would it take longer than 4 weeks. So, if you look at it, it makes much sense that anyone who is infected will show positive at an earlier time rather than at a later time. Just remember that upon infection, the virus will replicate at an alarming rate in the body and the body will respond by forming antibodies to combat the virus rightaway. It takes time (a few weeks)for these antibodies to be present enough to be detected by our latest test. Soon, they might come up with an anti body test that can detect very low amounts of antibodies and that test can be taked even 1 week after possible exposure. The theory that 90-95 will test positive by 4 weeks if infected makes sense. Many doctors are recomending that 6 weeks is conclusive and countries like Sweden says 8 weeks is conclusive. |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
4 week test of what? Where is the large scale study of acute HIV-1 infection, where people have been followed serially and all currently available tests performed on a weekly basis for 3 months? | |||
