PCR and RNA Testing Window......
Mar 31, 1999
Dear Doctor: I had a protected vaginal intercourse and unprotected oral sex with an active woman. I tested HIV negative at 8 days(RNA) and 34 days(PCR). Is this enough? The testing center said with confidence that I do not need addtional test. Are they right? Finally, in your professional experience, have you ever had anyone tested false negative with DNA PCR after the "28 Day" Recommended window? Again, thank you for your time, your site is the BEST on the Web!!!!

If the dates are correct, they are probably correct in their assessment. There are no prospective studies to confirm their statements though. I would challenge them to show me data. The current recomendations do not take into account PCR based testing, which is why they have the 6 month duration. I still recommend a long term antibody test. MH
