WHAT IS THIS?
Aug 26, 1998

What is "Black Hairy Tongue"? My Doctor said that is what I have, although he says its related to HIV, he has done numerous HIV tests, antibody, PCR DNA and PCR RNA all negative......he does not know what else could be causing it, my last sexual exposure, although low risk was 8 months ago....Should I still be worried about HIV. Thanks

Response from Dr. Holodniy

A black hairy tongue can be related to smoking, taking certain medications like trimethoprim-sulfa (Septra/Bactrim), or can be related to bacterial overgrowth in the mouth/tongue from bacteria which produce melanin type pigments. The latter can be treated with tongue brushing and oral antiseptics. Thus, this may not be related to HIV at all. MH
