pcr rna at 4 months
Oct 22, 1998

dear mr. holodniy, this is my situation. some month ago i had a low risk encounter with a woman (she performed oral sex on me). I' ve read that this is a very low risk activity but to be sure I decided to be tested. First antibody test after 20 days: negative, 2nd antibody test after 3 months: negative with also a check of cd4-cd8 level with no problem results. to have a definite answer my doctor suggested me to do a pcr rna quantitative test; I perform it in a good lab 4 months after the possibly risk encounter and the results said "negative, level below 400/ml". So I thought ok this is sufficent for me, but in the following months some strange symptoms apeeared, like as an herpes on my leg (that disappeared in a few days with treatment) and some candida on my penis at about 9 months after possible infections, that also after the treatment still remains in a very soft form.( please note that my wife was found to have candida at the same period and maybe I' have catched it from her). Up to now I' ve followed the idea of my doctor that the exams I've done were definitive, but sometimes I' m still anxious. Reading some of your previous anwer I' think that I' have done everything that was necessary, but Please suggest me something, do you think that Do I have to be tested again or can I remain quite sure. thank you

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I think the tests performed to date have been sufficient to rule out HIV infection. MH
