Viral load subtype detection
Sep 8, 2001

Does viral load testing by PCR RNA detect HIV 1 & 2 plus sub types or is their a viral load needed for each specific type of HIV (1 &2)? Thanks for the clarification. Also, what type or subtype is most prevalent in Russia? Are most labs having blood submitted for Elyssa tests in the US automatically testing for forms 1 & 2 or just one unless specifically ordered?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Commercially available "viral load" tests only detect HIV-1 and it's subtypes. The most prevalent Russian strains are type A and B. Labs are highly variable as to whether they test for HIV-1 alone or including HIV-2.
