HEY!
Jan 26, 1999

THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP FROM YESTERDAYS QUESTION I ASKED YOU. (ABOUT THE GLANDS IN UNDER MY ARMS) FUNNY HOW I HAVE WRITTEN TO YOU COMPLAINING THAT I HAD SHARP PAINS FOR MONTHS AND NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN I CAN FEEL A GLAND UNDER MY ARMS THAT WAS NOT THERE BEFORE. WELL, I WENT TO MY FAMILY DOC YESTERDAY AND HE SAID" LISTEN, THAAT IS NOTHING IT IS A SMALL GLAND AND IF IT IS THE SIZE OF A SMALL WALNUT COME BACK AND WE WILL WORRY" THE FACT IS THAT YES, THE GLAND IS SMALL. IT FEELS LIKE A SMALL PEAOR A LITTLE LARGER BUT IT WAS NOT THERE BEFORE AND I CANNOT IMAGINE IF IT IS NEW WHY MY DOC WOULD NOT BE WORRIED. I AM ON ANTIBIOTICS FOR MY PULLED TOOTH AND WOULDENT THAT MAKE IT DISAPPEAR IF IT WAS JUST SMALL INFECTION? WHERE DO I TURN FROM HERE? I AM SO TIRED. I JUST WANT TO HAVE ANOTHER BABY GET ON WITH LIFE, BUT THIS IS DEBILITATING. CAN JUST A SMALL INFECTION OR A REASON THAT SHOULD NOT BE WORRYSOME TO ME CAUSE ME TO HAVE NEW GLANDS TO APPEAR ALL OF A SUDDEN, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARENT HUGE? I KNOW YOU SAY GO TO YOUR DOC TO FIND OUT, BUT I DO AND I ALWAYS SEEM TO LEAVE HIS OFFICE FEELING INCREDIBLY STUPID. THANKS.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I think you should feel reassured after your visit. Your doctor is correct. Size, consistency, tenderness, number, location are all signs we use to figure out what is going on. It is also not unusual to have small glands like you describe as a reaction to local infections. Sometimes they stay around forever. MH
