| Spleen Sep 2, 2001 Hi Doc! Thanks for being so cool about everything. If one has a swollen spleen, related to HIV infection or not, would it hurts? How much? Stabbing pain or occassional discomfort? Can a person still run a marathon? thanks ; ) |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
The spleen is our major filter organ (along with the liver). It can be enlarged for a number of reasons (including HIV). Depending on how large it is, it will cause left upper abdominal pain. Usually it's a dull pain. Running is not an absolute contraindication. You will know when you start running if the discomfort is too great. | |||
