What is HIVII? What parts of the world is this prevelant in? Europe (The Netherlands in particular), Asia, Africa, Latin America?
Do current PCR and antibody tests detect these?
Response from Dr. Holodniy
HIV-2 is a distant cousin of HIV-1 (about 60% of the virus is the same). It is found almost exclusively on the west coast of Africa. Transplanted infections if you will (from migration, travel) have been sporadically found in Europe and the U.S. Current antibody tests (except the Home Access, home antibody test which HIV-1 only) do screen for HIV-1 and HIV-2. Current viral load tests and blood cell HIV-1 DNA PCR tests only test for HIV-1. MH
