|type O in Spain
Jan 21, 1999
Dear Doctor Holodniy, I am another reader of your page having had an unfortunate high risk exposure(faulty condom)6 months ago in Madrid, Spain, experiencing weird symptoms consistent with HIV infection ever since, and yet testing negative for HIV-1 and 2(see a similar question on 01/19). Do you know how many cases of type O infection have been reported in Spain, so far ? My own research leads to at least 4 reported cases. Any idea of an upper bound ? Thank you for your great service.

I don't follow the epidemiology that closely outside the US. Unless one is doing retrospective studies with newer tests, it would be hard to know what the real numbers might be. Testing for group O virus has only recently become available. I don't know how widely available antibody tests for group O virus are in Spain. You are correct, Dr. Soriano in Madrid has reported on a few cases. MH
