strange symptoms, low cd4, but testing hiv -

May 3, 1999

I experienced what looked like oral hairyy leukplakia for about 2 days 1 month ago and also lower abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits for the past month. I have had 3 hiv negative tests but my cd4 is only 620. My last possible exposure was over 1 year ago. First could this be hiv or could something else cause my cd4 to be low, second, other than the standard elisa is there a definitive yes/no test for hiv ( I realize the pcr can be false-positive)

Response from Dr. Holodniy

A CD4 count of 620 would be considered within the normal range. Our laboratory has a normal reference range between 550-1500. If you have had negative HIV tests out to one year after an exposure, you do not have HIV infection. MH

False oral positives in presence of oral herpes
do plasma centers report hiv infection to local plasma centers
