HIV+ for over 14 years,no meds, healthy

Aug 9, 1999

I was wondering if you had any information on natural resistance studies. My husband was infected at age 13 through blood products. He is now 27. He has never taken meds and has undetectable viral load and high t-cell counts, consistently. He rarely even gets colds. I was wondering if there is a possibilities that he has developed natural resistance of some sort. Since he became infected at such a young age and was going through so many changes?? I was just curious, even his Doctor has been amazed by his health. Thank You

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I think it's great! We need to study people like your husband more. He probably developed an effective cytotoxic t cell response to the virus. These are the major cells responsible for containment of viral replication. Almost all people infected do not, which explains why most people progress in the absence of treatment. MH
