ODDS
Aug 12, 1999

On may 28, 1999 you answered a question that dealt with the odds of getting hiv infection with anal or oral sex, unportected vaginal sex was not mentioned. What would be the odds of getting the virus from someone of unknown sero status from a one time exposure? Also, if someone would have unprotected sex with someone that has AIDS, would the risk of contracting the virus be greater than having unprotected sex with someone who is just hiv+?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

These are unanswerable questions. There are statistics based on lots of assumptions. The odds range from 0-100%. For people that had one exposure and became infected (and it happens), it's 100%. MH
