A question about a previous Question
Aug 26, 1998

Hi,

In a recent question you mention that the PCR RNA will not pick up HIV 1 Type A, why and what test will. Will the Elisa pick it up? Thanks

Response from Dr. Holodniy

The branch DNA(bDNA)assay from Chiron, which is available at several large labs and at their reference lab, will pick up subtype A. Newer viral load tests from Digene and Genprobe will also. These latter two are not widely available. PCR has difficulties with this strain because of genetic sequence variation at the molecular sites needed to perform the test. Most ELISA tests will pick up this subtype. MH
