Blood in eye
Aug 18, 2001

Dear Mark

I am a podiatrist and had an incident of a blood splash into my eye during the removal of a toenail . The amount was small . 1) Is there any documented evidence of transmission this way?

2) Should I be tested , and

3) If i was tested then what tests must be ordered

Thank you

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I am not aware of transmission occurring from such an incident. In the health care setting, we usually make an attempt to test the source patient as well as the health care worker with a screening HIV antibody test. Depending on the types of procedures you are involved in, you may want to include goggles or a face shield as standard personal protective equipment to eliminate these exposures.
