please help - any hope?
Aug 12, 2001
i've just been diagnosed with hiv, 6 weeks after infection.
As you may expect i have a lot of questions:
1. Should i start treatment immediately, i've seen several reports saying it's best, others saying wait, at my stage what do you thinks best?
2. Any idea on how long i've got with strict med adherance? i know it used to be 10 years, has this increased significantly with treatment (doubled?), i know it's hard to say anything concrete, but i just need some sort of likely expectation. (i just want to live a normal life like everybody else)
3. Any hope of a cure before my time's up? (just after your personal views).
I know you get a lot of mails, but an answer would really be appreciated, i hear so much conflicting information.

I can't answer all of your questions directly because I need more information. For instance, what is your viral load and CD4 count? Current guidelines suggest that treatment should be started in a patient with a CD4 count < 350 and a viral load > 30-55,000/ml. In patients with higher CD4 counts and lower viral loads, treatment can be deferred or not depending on other factors in the clinical history. MH
