PCR Again
Jun 16, 1999

Dear Doc

Thanks for the answer. I have put you the following question:

"I had a Pcr test 40 days after possible exposition to HIV. It was negative (<200). In the result sheet was written: pl(edta) HIV 1 (PCR) Negative Can you please explain what does it mean and how accurate is it?"

It is natural that the test is not Fda approved because i did it in Portugal. I would like to know now what kind of test is it: RNA, DNA, Qualitative, Quantitative, etc. Thanks again and sorry for waisting your time.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

No trouble or time wasted. Given the information (threshold of 200 copies), it is likely that this was a quantiative plasma HIV RNA test.
