CD4 %
Jun 29, 1999

Dear Dr,

if someone has has CD4/CD8 percentage less than 1, let's say 0.6, would this alone an indication of HIV infection???

I guess, my question is: Can a normal person has a CD4/CD8 percentage below 1???

What weight would you give the most in ruling out Hiv infection? PCR, ELisas, t-cell panel, or WBs?

Thank you.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

People without HIV can have ratios < 1. How many and how frequently this is seen, I don't know. I would never use a t cell count in the diagnosis of HIV infection. A PCR based test is really only useful in the first few weeks after acute infection. After that and ELISA and confirmatory WB are still the gold standard.
