HIV-1 DNA - Subtypes Looked For?
Jul 21, 1999

Dr. Holodniy, are you familiar with Quest Diagnostics' HIV-1 DNA PCR test? My specific question is "What are ALL of the HIV-1 subtypes that this test is capable of detecting?" Please answer as I have tested using Roche Ultrasentive RNA and a viral load was found, but they say that is not a confirming diagnostic test. I have yet to seroconvert, so I am searching for a DNA PCR test that at least detects subtypes A-G (as does the Roche Ultrasensitive). Thanks in advance for your anwser.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I am not sure what test they are using. So I can't answer your question directly. The RNA test is not FDA approved for HIV diagnosis, and has been associated with false positive tests. If they are using the Roche DNA test, then it will have the same performance characteristics as the RNA test. MH
