CMV AND SPINAL MENINGITIS
May 22, 2000

HI MY NAME IS TERESA AND MY BROTHER WAS JUST DIAGNOSED FULL BLOWN ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO. WELL NOW HE IS BACK IN THE HOSPITAL WITH CMV IN HIS BRAIN AND SPINAL MENINGITIS. HIS T-CELL COUNT HAS WENT FROM 32 TO 34 IN THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. HIS LEGS AND STOMACH ARE BADLY SWOLLEN HE CAN HARDLY WALK AND HE IS SEEING DOUBLE. WHAT DO YOU THINK HIS POSSIBILITIES OF PULLING THRU THIS ARE? VERY BADLY WORRIED IN FLORIDA.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

You don't indicate whether your brother is receiving treatment for HIV infection, and I assume he is receiving treatment for CMV infection. We have seen many people recover from this kind of situation. If the HIV infection can be controlled, and the t cell count increased above 100-200 with aggressive HIV treatment, he will do very well.
