CD4 count is 23 cells/ml

Dec 3, 2017

I have started my HIV treatment 3 days ago but my labs were VL: 41000 copies/ml and my CD4 count: 23 cells/ml. I think my count is not correct because I feel excellent, I dont have any symptom of AIDS (with that amount of CD4 I am considered an AIDS patient). What happened here?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Surprisingly, some people can have advanced HIV infection with low CD4 counts and not have manifested any symptoms. That said, you don't indicate whether this CD4 count was repeated prior to treatment, or what the CD4 percent is. In general, someone with a CD4 count of 23 would have a CD4 percent around 5%. If that is the percent, then the CD4 count is likely correct.
