My son has HIV. Doctor has done CD4 and geno ( viral load test). Next Mon will be 3 weeks. He has an appointment this Thursday with the infectious disease doctor. But without the results he has to reshcedule for another day. Please tell me if you know how long this test takes and any other advise you can give. Signed a mom

The test results are usually back within 1-2 weeks after blood collection. In addition to obtaining a CD4 count, HIV viral load test, and HIV genotype (resistance test), other routine blood tests (blood count, liver and kidney function), and screening for various kinds of infections should also be performed. Once all those results are back a decision on starting HIV treatment and specifically what HIV meds should be prescribed will be made.
