should i start medication although viral load is undetectable?

Aug 5, 2012

dear Dr. Holodniy, I've been tested positive with cd4 count 316, cd4% 21% and undetectable viral load. Should I start the arv medication? given the fact that the viralload is undetectable, is it not wiser to wait first?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Although it may sound illogical to start meds, given the apparent undetectable viral load, your CD4 count and percent are already decreased from normal levels (500-1500 and 30-50%). You can repeat those tests and if the results are consistent, I would recommend starting HIV meds.
