Jul 15, 2012

Hi doc, I have been tested HIV+ a week back my counts are cd4/cd8 ratio =0.75 and absoulte cd4 count is 471. so when should i start my treatment and how often should i test for cd4 in an year and do u think i should start ART now ? please advice need help !!!

Response from Dr. Holodniy

It is also important to know a couple of other numbers, what your CD4% is, and what your viral load results are. A normal CD4 count is between 500-1500 and a normal CD4% is between 30-50%. Your current CD4 count is just below the normal range. Many experts would suggest starting HIV treatment now (certainly if your viral load is > 100,000), but others might consider waiting if the CD4% is normal and your viral load is low (e.g. < 1000).

All numbers are "normal" except total CD4 count
CD4 decline concurrent with low VL
