CD4
Dec 25, 2011

Hi, I would like to know if I could do something besides taking my meds to get my T-cells count hire, I was diagnose with Aids in 1998 and since 1999 i been unditectable but my cd4 counts are always between 250 to 300 my doctor told me not to worry about it that he is keeping an eye on it plus my % is 26 I really don't know what that means but I'm worry and sad because I do everyhing Im supposed to do and my cd4 never changes, I want to have a baby but not until I know my body is strong enough to do that, my viral load is under 20 and I'm happy about that, please let me know if there is something I could do to bring that number up.

Thank you

Response from Dr. Holodniy

In general, I agree with your doctor. Although you don't indicate what your CD4 count was prior to starting HIV meds, it is likely you had a significant increase from where you started. Your CD4 count is lower than what we might expect from a CD4% of 26%. In general, you are in a better situation than someone with the same CD4 count and a CD4% of 15-20%, which is what we would normally expect for that count. You also have longevity on your side, which indicates that you not had any significant complications for over 10 years as a result of where your immune system is. Unfortunately, there is not much one can do to further the increase in CD4 count, given an undetectable viral load. Additional HIV meds or changing HIV meds will not result in further increases in CD4 count. I would consult with an obstetrician who has experience with HIV infected women and pregnancy about your options.
