Cystic Fibrosis and HIV

Jun 12, 2011

I am a 38 year old man who has Cystic Fibrosis. I am recently tested HIV+. How will my CF effect the HIV? or Vica Versa. I have a moderate case of CF, my pulmonary functions are in the mid 50% range.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

There is very little experience and published literature on the subject of patients with CF and HIV infection. In general, there is no contraindication to taking HIV meds, and as you know, lung infections are a significant risk with CF, and would also be with concomitant HIV infection. Although you don't indicate what your CD4 count or viral load results are, I think in your case, it would be very important to get on HIV meds and preserve your immune system as much as possible.

if i cleared hep c once can i do it again
cd4 count
