significance of HCV RNA QUAN Lab Result
Nov 14, 2010

Hi, my father passed 10/20/10 from End Stage Liver Disease. This prompted me to request test. Hepatitis C RNA Quan values from results state the following: HCV RNA Log value = 7.46 or 28.6 Million copies per IU/ml . I understand the values expressed are the same but I simply want to know what to think here? I am 48 with no symptoms which I understand is typical... Liver Enzymes are all within normal range! total Bilirubin is 1.2 mg/dl... total Protein is high @ 8.2 g/dl. In your professional opinion what does this all say? Regards,

Response from Dr. Holodniy

It means that you have chronic infection with HCV with a moderately high HCV viral load. It doesn't say anything about how long you have been infected or the extent of liver involvement or damaage. You need to consult with a liver speacialist.
