CD4 Decrease While Decreasing VL
Aug 22, 2010

In July my lab results showed just over 200VL and CD4s were 500. A retest one month later showed undetectable VL but CD4s dropped to 323. My doctor suggested in another month I do another blood work rather than waiting for three months. My question is is this fluctuation very out of the ordinary (I am on atripla) and may my CD4s go back up before switching meds or is this wishful thinking?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I agree with your doctor's plan. That kind of variation in viral load is seen not too infrequently. You don't indicate what the CD4% is, but I suspect the CD4% has not changed significantly, despite the decrease in CD4 count, making the decline likely not significant.
