Is the Virus Load really Undectable?
Jul 25, 2010
Hi Dr Holodniy,
I was wondering about how well we are able to track the viral load accurately. I watch my lab results, nothing changes, and everything is perfect for 22 years. However, I have Lipodystrophy /atrophy and as I understand, some of the HAART combos cause the Lipodystrophy. What I do not understand is all the people who are not on meds are suffering the same fate with the atrophy. If the virus is not active and undetectable, why is this happening to our bodies? Is it possible the virus is causing this even though its undetectable? What I mean is if the virus can replicate cells why could it not learn how to replicate cells without being detected?
Response from Dr. Holodniy
Great question. Although the mechanisms and causes are not totally understood regarding lipodystrophy, both the virus and certain meds can cause the same type of inflammatory processes in the body resulting in these manifestations.
