| steroids Apr 29, 2001 I'm 36 years old, hiv positive, and never had any desease; I''ve had herpes, but I have this since I was 18 y.o. and hadn't had sex till then, only kisses and very safe caresses. My viral load is 12.700. I have had steroids (deca durabolin) for more than 6 years now, and I would like to keep taking them. Will this make my viral load increase? Thanks a lot, brasilian guy. |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
Dear Brazil: We don't know, since there are not alot of good controlled studies, what the impact of steroids is on viral load. Some steroids like prednisone can over time decrease the immune system's ability to control the virus. Other steroids like DHEA, may help the immune system. There has not been any definitive answers as to whether testosterone or other anabolic steroids adversely affect HIV infection. I would follow viral loads closely and see. MH | |||||||||
