Mononucleosis Risk
Dec 6, 2009

Good morning.

I'm 33yo, still not on meds, HIV from 2 years. My last CD4 count is 600 with VL >100.000.

At the beginning of November (the 8th) I had sex with a guy. The day after he had high fever and some days later he went to the hospital for some breathing troubles and fever and they found that he had mononucleosis.

Should I be worried that I could have caught it?? I have readen on internet that it has 20-50 days of incubation period. Could I do some exams for checking if I have taken it or should I be worried if have some syntoms (which one, and what should I Do?)

Thanks

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Although it is possible, it is unlikely. Mono is usually caused by EBV or CMV viruses, which most of us have been exposed to as children or adolescents and therefore have some immunity to them already. Given what your CD4 count is, your immune system is in pretty good shape. I don't think it's indicated to get tests at this time. If you were to develop flu like symptoms (hope you got your flu shot already) then you might tell your doctor about your symptoms and possible exposure and go from there.
