Drop in CD4 - Flu shot or..?
Nov 14, 2009

Hi Doctor,

I have been on Sustiva and Truvada for exactly one year now. I have come around from CD4 of 99 and 500000 VL to manageable numbers - but no spectacular recovery. In September, my CD4 was 340 (0,13 CD4/CD8) , VL zero (it has been the last two lab results). But last week, approximately a week after I got a flu shot, my CD4 came out 266 (0,12 CD4/CD8). Could not get my VL results yet but I am terribly freaked out, if my treatment is failing or not. Currently I have almost no side effects so I would love to continue with this regimen, so I would be glad with any reassurances on whether this is a blip in CD4 and I will be back on recovery path... Feeling very down right now.

Thank you for taking the time to read my question.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Although it is possible that the flu shot resulted in a decline in CD4 count, this is less likely in people on HIV treatment when compared to people not on treatment. You don't indicate what your CD4% is but I suspect that has not changed. I would not be concerned at this point.
