Declining CD4
Nov 14, 2009

I have always had an undectable viral load, even before starting Atripla 14 months ago. My very first labs were VL undetectable and CD4 510. My doctor insisted in starting Atripla because of my age (I am 55 years old). I continue to be undetectable but my CD4 has declined first to 290 and now 160 (15%). I don't feel sick, I feel normal, but I am very concerned why my CD4 is declining. I thought the goal of treatment was to keep an udectable VL.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

The goals of treatment are to get your viral load to undetectable so you can preserve your immune system by preserving your CD4 count. Something is up here and needs to be investigated as to why in the face of an undetectable viral load your CD4 count and percent are declining.
