CD4/vl test
Nov 7, 2009

I am an American citizen currently living in Seoul, South Korea. I recently (less than 2 weeks ago) found out I am HIV positive. I had a test 6 & 3 months ago and they were negative. So i think it is relatively new. Here is my question.

I need to checkout my CD4 and VL numbers. I can go home for 3 weeks in Feb. but I contacted AID Atlanta and Chicago AIDS project and they both told me that was not long enough to do any test and since I am not a resident there - I don't currently have any residency in America, I have been here almost 10 years, they couldn't do anything for me anyway - not even a CD4 or VL test.

Since I am in Asia I heard that Thailand is a good place to go to get tested, that it is expensive but that it is anonymous and pretty good. Do you know ANYTHING about Thailand, where I should go and what can be done there within 3 weeks? What I SHOULD have tested! If I need drugs do you think I could get them in Thailand? I cant be finished here until August and would like to stay longer if I could but I don't want to risk my health in order to save money.

I am soooo very new at this I am not even sure what test I need and how to read them. I only know about CD4 and VL from websites.

I can not receive any services here in Korea because if it is found out I am positive I am IMMEDIATELY deported. I was able to get the test through an anonymous testing place but they only provide the test nothing else. I don't have insurance in Thailand but I know things are much cheaper there and it is close. If there is a better place, please tell me

Thanks for answering any of these questions.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Thailand has both good testing and treatment resources. Unfortunately, I can't recommend anything specific for you.
