viral load

Nov 7, 2009

Hello Dr.

How do you monitor someones viral load if pcr is not able to quantitate the infection. Also if one becomes superinfected will pcr still be able to quantitate viral load.

Thank you in advance

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I am not sure if you mean specifically a PCR based test or availability of any kind of viral load quantitation technology. There are other HIV viral load tests out there that do not use PCR. If none of the viral load tests are available than it is very difficult to monitor viral load. A viral load test may help determine superinfection particularly those who might have an undetectable or low viral load and now have a higher or detectable viral load. However, more sophisticated tests (not readily available in commercial labs) are required to distinguish between different viruses.

How often should your labs be run
