| re: low white cells low cd4% high viral load and toxo Oct 31, 2009 Apparently the first hospital my sister in law was in gave us a count instead of percentage for her cd4. I spoke to the doctor and she said the CD4 count is 303 and 15% and her viral load is now 250000. It is possible that the nurse at the first hospital gave us the percentage as a count by mistake. My sisters white count has dropped some more. It was 2.6 when she was admitted on Tuesday by Friday it was 2.5 and they said yesterday's labs showed it had dropped some more. They are giving her a shot in the stomache today to try and boost the white count. We asked the doctor if she can recover from this and he closed his eyes and shrugged his shoulders. They have ordered more tests today but nobody was in there when the doctor came and my sister can't remember what the tests are. She is alert but I am beginning to wonder if something isn't affecting her reasoning abilities. She wants somebody to be with her 24 hours a day and when we spend the night she keeps checking to see if we are awake, so she doesn't want us to sleep. She is afraid if she goes to sleep she won't wake up. She did get some sleep night before last but said she wasn't asleep even though she was snoring. We really want somebody to tell us what we are up against. We know this is a serious infection but the doctor said there would be no need for propholaxis (sp?) when she goes home. They also say if she takes hiv meds now it will counteract with the toxo meds and cause her to get sicker. We are really confused as to what is going on. She has been in two different hospitals within 3 weeks and still no hiv meds and doesnt seem to be any better. She only eats a few bites of food a day also. Could the lesions on her brain be affecting her thinking and behavior? Do you think she will ever leave the hospital or should we get prepared for the worse? To talk to her she doesn't seem or look like she's on deaths door but she is very tired and very weak. |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
Yes, if the diagnosis is truly toxoplasmosis then those lesions in her brain could be affecting her thinking, memory and sleep, depending on where the lesions are in her brain. That is certainly a better CD4 count and percent than what you had indicated previously. The count and percent are in sync between each other. It seems difficult for me to understand that this could be toxo if her CD4 count/percent is truly that high. It is good that they are giving her medicine to increase her white blood cell count. I still don't understand the rationale for delaying HIV treatment. If she could get that started, it would go a long way to getting her out of the hospital. | ||||||||||
