Understanding my T cell tests
Oct 31, 2009

I don't understand my lab results. I have recently had bacterial menigitis. I am HIV+. My Cd4 count is 546, my cd8 count is 6493, my cd3+ count is 7039, and my cd4/cd8 ratio is 0.08. I live in ZImbabwe and have not started taking any arvs. How bad is my hiv infection?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

Your CD4 count is in the normal range. Your CD8 count is markedly elevated and this is something we see and is expected with HIV infection. Although your CD8 increase is several times above what we usually see. Because your CD8 count is so high, it is driving your CD3/CD8 ratio down, way out of proportion of what we would usually expect. In general, I think you are in pretty good shape.
