Really worried about CD4 and viral load
Oct 18, 2009

I just got diagnosed and my CD4 count is 38 and my viral load is 28000...my doctor didn't seem too worried and states I'll be fine...but reading online, it seems that I have full blown AIDS since my CD4 count is so low....is this true? Can my CD4 count come up to a good level and not be deemed AIDS?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

If your CD4 count is truly 38, and that is not your CD4 percent, then yes, you have advanced HIV infection and AIDS. You are at significant risk for developing very serious opportunistic infections now. I am curious about your doctor's response, again if your CD4 count is really 38. If that is you real count, then you need to start HIV treatment immediately. Yes, your counts will improve and likely can get above 200 (the point where some is no longer considered to have AIDS)
