Undetectable VL , CD4 percentage dropped
Oct 18, 2009

Hi Doctor Holodniy, I am on Atripla for the past 8 months. My CD4 rose steadily from 320, 16% before treatment to 488, 34% while my VL declined to undetectable levels from 28000. I just got my new test results, VL is still undetectable but CD4% dropped to 28% from 34% within the last 3 months, I don't have the absolute number yet due to a technical lab problem but I'm guessing it will be low as well given the sharp drop in percentage. My doctor is on vacation, I would like to get your opinion on this. Is it normal to see such sharp fall in CD4 percentage while still having undetectable VL levels?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

That is a bit out of the range of normal CD4% variability, which is usually < 3%. I am not that concerned as your viral load remains undetectable. I don' think there is anything I would do at this point. I think your meds are working for you.
