T Cells fall off the chart
Sep 26, 2009

I have had an undetectable with a 730 to 830 T cell count for the last 18 months, and my count has steadily increased until this last test which resulted in an undetectable with a 530 t cell count. The tests were done at different labs, do you think there is enough reason to go back to my previous doctor and ask for new tests? The new tests were done in a free clinic and I'm wondering if their handling of the samples is as careful as the private physician. The only other change is my weight, I've gained nearly 40 lbs. in five months for no apparent reason other than I've got an overwhelming appetite. I'm also on some psychotropic drugs that may be affecting my weight. Do you have any experience with falling t cells and weight gain or suggestions other than the obvious Lose Weight? Thanks for your help.

Response from Dr. Holodniy

The difference in laboratories likely accounts for the difference in CD4 count. I am not concerned given your continued undetectable viral load, and all of your CD4 counts have been in the normal range. It is likely that your CD4% has remained more stable and is a more stable number over time compared to absolute counts. Your weight gain could indeed be the result of psychotropic medications. You don't indicate which med or what the indication is, but there may be other medications for the condition that don't result in such a weight gain.
