HIV and Lupus
Aug 30, 2009

My partner has Lupus and recently diagnosed with HIV as well. How do the two interact? Where can I find information on how to support her good health? Any suggestions, comments or advice?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

This is tricky, as HIV affects the immune system by impairing function, and lupus is generally associated with increased or overactive immune function. Treatment of lupus sometimes requires using medications that suppress the immune system. Care requires the coordination of an HIV specialist and rheumatologist.
