Gastric Bypass - Atripla - Absorption
Aug 30, 2009

Good Day Sir, I have recently been diagnosed positive with a cd4 of 222. The doc started me on Atripla. I had a gastric bypass 3 years ago. Does the bypass affect how this medication is used by the body? Do I need to take a larger dose?

Response from Dr. Holodniy

I am not aware of any data to answer your question. Obtaining a blood level of efavirenz contained in the atripla might help to determine if there is adequate absorption. On the other hand, if your viral load becomes undetectable soon after starting and is maintained at an undetectable level, that would also answer the question.
