| CD4 count up and down! Jul 25, 2009 Hi I have read a lot on here and very impressed with your help, but also very worried that are Dr's out there who leave there patients feeling confused. Anyhow I would like to see what you think of my case. I was diagnosed Hiv+ June 08, with CD4 690 36%, VL 18000, over the past year my results have gone as follows. CD4 697 32%, VL 16000/ CD4 1093 33% VL 10000 and CD4 521 32% VL 5000. My first Dr explained that Cd4 levels go up and down all the time and peak drops over the years, do you know about this and able to explain further. I was only recently informed about CD4 percentage and it's relevance. Can percentage fall and drop in the same way as CD4 count does, or will just continue to drop over time? Also as you can see, my Viral load is dropping and dropping, does this mean a possible successful fight against the Virus or just my body settling in for the long run? Thank you |

Response from Dr. Holodniy
I agree with your doctor. The CD4 count does fluctuate and the CD4% is a much more stable number over time. Your viral load is in the low to moderate range. It too can fluctuate, sometimes by as much as 3 fold (or 3 times up or down) because of assay variation. Thus, your viral load "drop" is essentially within the limits of assay variability. | ||||||||||
